Biography: 

John McFarlane retired from the Australian Federal Police in 1999, having previously served as the AFP's Director/Intelligence.  Prior to that, he served with the Australian Intelligence Community.  In 2000 he was appointed the Executive Director of the Australian Committee of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific (AUS-CSCAP) and the inaugural Co-Chair of the CSCAP Working Group on Transnational Crime.  Since 2005, John has been increasingly involved in research and lecturing, especially at the UNSW@ADFA, ANU, MacQuarie University, Victoria University (Wellington) and at George Washington University, Washington DC.  He also lectures regularly at the Australian Defence College, the National Security College and the Australian Federal Police.  From 2004 - 2007, he was a member of the Project Monitoring Team of the Timor Leste Police Development Project.

 

Research interests: 

Transnational, serious and organised crime, links between crime and terrorism, corruption, fragile states, police peace operations, military support for law enforcement, and maritime security.

 

Research projects: 

CEPS relations with Commonwealth Government Departments and Agencies; transnational, serious and organised crime in the national security context (a study for ASPI); and the strategic implications of corruption (including contributing to the development of an Australian National Anti-Corruption Plan).
