David Baker
 david.baker@arts.monash.edu.au (03) 9902 6387 | Associate Professor David Baker is Head, Criminal Justice, School of Applied Media and Social Sciences, at Monash University Gippsland. Formerly at Monash University, he was a Senior Lecturer in Criminal Justice and Criminology and a Lecturer in the Department of Police and Justice Studies. Prior to Monash appointment, he was a Training Instructor at the Victoria Police Academy for five years.
David’s main areas of research are public order policing and police use of force. His most significant contribution is a single-authored book, Batons and Blockades: Policing Industrial Disputes in Australasia, Circa, 2005. David has researched and published numerous interdisciplinary articles and chapters in relation to police history, the policing of protests, police use of force, comparative international policing, the strategic role of the Australian Federal Police, South Pacific policing, police unionism, criminal justice, labour history, industrial relations and politics. He was a member of the International Policing Research Consortium on the Police Use of Force whose findings were published in a special edition of Crime, Law and Social Control (2009). He is a Chief Investigator for the ARC Linkage grant research on the “Impact of Incarceration on Children’s Care”.
