Senior Sergeant Nina Westera joined the New Zealand Police in 1999 after completing a Master of Science majoring in Psychology at the University of Auckland. She began her policing career in Counties-Manukau where she joined the CIB and qualified as a detective. Nina moved to Wellington where she supervised a squad of investigators. She has led and been involved in the investigation of serious crimes including homicides, serious assaults and child sexual abuse. Nina is the National Adviser: Standards and Training in the recently established Investigative Interviewing Unit. This national position was created to bring New Zealand police in line with international good practice in investigative interviewing. Nina is responsible for developing the training and quality assurance framework for investigative interviewing in the New Zealand Police. She is currently completing her PhD on how to improve investigations and prosecutions of sexual assault cases through interviewing practices.
