| Halim Rane h.rane@griffith.edu.au (07) 3735 5160 | Dr Halim Rane is a CEPS Research Associate and also currently the Deputy Director of the Griffith Islamic Research Unit and lecturer in the National Centre of Excellence in Islamic Studies. His expertise is in the area of Islam-West relations in both the international and inter-community contexts. His main areas of research and publication include: - Political Islam and second generation Islamist political parties;
- The Israeli-Palestine conflict and a resolution based on human rights and international law;
- Jihad and extremist Islamist groups;
- A contextual-maqasid methodology for Quranic interpretation; and
- Islam in the mass media and inter-community relations.
Dr Rane’s PhD dissertation, ‘Reconstructing Jihad amid Competing International Norms: Implications for a Resolution of the Israel-Palestine Conflict’, was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal for Excellence in the Doctor of Philosophy. His subsequent book, Reconstructing Jihad amid Competing International Norms has been highly praised internationally by experts in the fields of international relations, conflict resolution and Islamic studies. Dr Rane’s forthcoming book entitled Islam and Contemporary Civilisation: Evolving Ideas, Transforming Relations (published by Melbourne University Press)will be released in July 2010.
